Hit the Short Game Hard

Practice is a catch-22 for the Senior Player. It's more important than ever for keeping your swing muscles in shape; yet you can't go at it with the same aggresive attitude as when you were younger. However, there is no downside to working extra hard on your short game. It doesn't hurt the body - except for maybe a stiff back - and with power on the wane, chipping, pitching and putting are more important to your scores than ever.

So don't cut back on your practicing - just reorganize it. Instead of spending the majority of your time on the practice tee, devote just enought time to the full swing to get loose, refresh your feel for the proper swing mechanics, and maybe work on one swing key. Twenty to thirty minutes is more than enough time. Use the remainder of the time to hone your short game. Spend 10 minutes on pitches and sand play, 15 minutes on chipping, and at least 15 or so on putting. You will be less tired at the end of your practice session and more energized (not to mention better around the greens) when it comes time to play.
