Hit
the Sand to the Hole
One of the toughest notions
for a high handicapper to believe is that
a full swing is required from a greenside
bunker. It doesn't seem logical to hit
the ball 30 feet or less requires such
a long swing. As a result high-handicap
golfers often decelerate through impact
and fail to get the ball out of the bunker.
But you are not hitting
the ball, are you? In a sand explosion
shot you cut the ball out on a layer of
sand, which propels the ball forward.
The club and ball never make contact,
so look at a sand shot this way: You're
not hitting the ball to the hole, you
are trying to hit a divot of sand to the
hole and this requires a fuller swing
than you would assume.
The next time you are in
a bunker, on the course or at Golf Quest's
practice bunkers, think of hitting the
sand to the hole. With a fuller, more
acceleration downswing, the ball will
float out on a pillow of sand and safely
onto the green.
