Putting Practice
Strokes
As I mentioned in an earlier
tip, speed or distance control in putting
is just as important as direction. One
of the best ways to gauge the speed of
your putts is with the practice strokes
you take immediately prior to a putt.
Taking the same number of practice strokes
before each putt can be a critical element
to your pre-shot routine, but what's more
important is that you try to simulate
the precise length and force of the stroke
necessary for that putt.
Tour pros have been known
to do this many different ways. For instance,
Phil Mickelson takes 2 practice strokes
prior to each putt. One is intentionally
longer than necessary and one is intentionally
shorter. Then, when he gets over his putt,
he tries to use a stroke somewhere in
between those 2 lengths. Hopefully, it
is the proper speed and length!
Try it next time you're
putting or try to come up with a routine
that works for you. I'm sure it will help
you make a few more putts and make your
round of golf more enjoyable.
