Maintain
the Power Angle
Many of my students ask
me: Why do I slice? and/or Why can't I
hit it as far as my Playing partners.
The answer is simple. Learn to use your
hands less on the start of the downswing.
If you want to get rid of
the slice and add some power, you have
to avoid unhinging your wrists too early
in your downswing. Also known as casting.
Use a box or an old golf bag and lay it
down far enough behind the ball so you
just miss it on your backswing. Start
by making half speed swings, to get the
proper feel of hinging and unhinging.
If you are clipping the box or bag on
the downswing then you casting or unhinging
too quickly. This is a sure sign your
right hand (right handed players) has
become to active and your left wrist has
collapsed.
Your hands need to work
together in the downswing. Maintain the
angle in your right wrist to miss the
box or bag on the downswing. Hold the
club head back and delay the release of
the wrists. If you lose that angle too
early, you'll lose most of your stored
power in your swing and a good bit of
control. Your hands may sting a
little too!
