Laying
Up to Your Favorite Distance
When most golfers are going
to hit their second shot on a par 5, many
will instinctively grab a fairway wood
and try to muscle it either on the green
or as close as possible to the green.
More often than not, this will end up
in a bunker or heavy rough or at an awkward
distance from the pin. Sometimes, this
is the best option, but most of the time,
you are better off choosing a shot that
will leave you with your favorite shot
to the green.
For instance, many people
like to hit from exactly 100 yards. This
may be a full pitching wedge or sand wedge
and they are very comfortable from that
yardage, especially from a good lie in
the fairway. So next time you're in the
fairway 250 yards from the green, instead
of trying to smash a fairway wood close
to or on the green, try laying up to that
favorite distance. In this case, you can
choose a club that goes 150 yards and
if you execute correctly, you'll be in
the fairway and facing a very comfortable
100 yard wedge shot for your third. Conversely,
if you hit the fairway wood fairly well
and came up 40 yards off the green, you
are faced with a very awkward yardage
that requires a partial wedge shot with
a lot of touch. This can be done on par
4's as well when you can't reach the putting
surface with your second shot.
So next time you're faced
with this type of situation, if you leave
yourself with your favorite distance into
the green, you'll find yourself closer
to the pin.
