Hitting
from the Top
Hitting from the top describes
a downswing which features a violent change
of direction, found mostly with high handicappers
but even good players suffer from occasionally. Many
golfers, in an attempt to hit at, or kill,
the ball, lunge forward with the upper
body and the club is forced to approach
the ball too steeply, far from the ideal
downswing plane(often termed swinging
"over the top", a basic reason
for golfers slicing and pulling the ball. With
this type of swing, the head and right
shoulder are overly active, resulting
in a loss of both power and accuracy.
The lower body should initiate
the downswing movement, and the body as
a whole is then able to unwind in one
synchronized motion. This action produces
a swinging motion of the arms, hands and
the club which appears effortless and
allows the acceleration of the clubhead
to peak through impact.
Try this exercise: take
your six iron and with your feet only
6 inches apart, hit a few shots.Swing
slowly and smoothly back and let your
lower body unwind to initiate the start
of the downswing.Simply let the club fall-let
gravity pull it down before releasing
the clubhead through impact.Keep your
head stead, allowing the club to approach
from the inside on a much more shallow
plane. This will give you the sensation
of swinging the clubhead through the ball
as opposed to hitting at it.After a while,
graduate to your normal stance.
