Flexibility
Loss of flexibility means
a smaller coil on the backswing, which
usually results in a loss of clubhead
speed and distance. But be aware that
the shoulder coil is not the only link
to clubhead speed. Your hands and arms
can take over the work, and losing flexibility
does not have to cost precious yards.
Make whatever coil you can
on the backswing and work on increasing
flexibility, paying special attention
to using other parts of your body to create
clubhead speed. Keep your grip pressure
light and your arms soft; you may not
be able to get the clubhead to parallel,
but allowing your left arm to bend slightly
and fully cocking your wrists will help
give you a wide arc.
Stay light on your feet
as well, allowing your weight to shift
to the right side is crucial for loading
up for a powerful downswing. Starting
down, feel your weight shift to your left
side as you accelerate the clubhead through
the hitting area with your hands and arms.
The looser and softer you are, the faster
the club will swing and the further the
ball will go.
