A
Club Change for Firm Sand
One of the most common complaints
I hear from golfers is the difficulty
they have playing from firm or wet sand.
Because it is so firm and heavy, many
golfers will either leave the ball in
the bunker or end up skulling it over
the green. Most golf professionals actually
prefer the sand to be firm because it
is more consistent and you can execute
most shots more easily. One of the reasons
for poor results from firm or wet sand
is the use of a sand wedge with too much
bounce on the bottom of the club
or too wide a sole.
Next time you practice bunker
shots, bring your pitching wedge with
you. If you're practicing from firm sand,
you'll find that the narrower sole and
less bounce on the pitching wedge will
allow you to enter and pass through the
firm sand more easily.
Most sand wedges, with their different
design, will tend to hit that firm sand
and bounce up into the ball. The pitching
wedge will tend to have a sharper leading
edge and will knife through the sand better,
allowing you to enter the sand closer
to the ball
without worrying about the club skidding
into the back of the ball. Try it in our
practice bunkers after a rain the next
time you're at Golf Quest.
p.s. If you struggle with
your wedges from both firm sand and firm
fairways, you might want to consider a
3rd wedge for your bag, one with more
loft than your pitching wedge, but with
less bounce and narrower sole than your
sand wedge. Come demo our Titleist Vokey
wedges at Golf Quest Brookfield. I'm sure
we have the right wedge for you!
